Popular presenter of ITV’s The Chase, Bradley Walsh, has been announced today as a new companion in long running BBC sci-fi show, Doctor Who.
The decision is being hailed as a great move against the increasing underrepresentation of older white men on television.
Fans previously voiced their concern following the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor with many feeling the choice would be taking opportunities away from white male actors.
This follows a recent trend in television which has seen many new shows feature a main protagonist without the traditional penis and testicles. While feedback has been largely positive many older white men have reported feeling alienated and unable to relate to characters with entirely different genitals.
A spokesman for the Doctor Who fan club said, “This is great news for us long time fans of the show who were beginning to get worried we wouldn’t have anyone to dress up as at conventions. Bradley will be a great addition to the cast and we look forward to him keeping all the women and minorities grounded in the reality of the story. There’s a point where even sci-fi can become unbelievable and the idea that someone could change their genitals or a Doctor could be female has been a bridge too far for many.”
While the BBC are keeping many details of the new series under wraps they revealed Mr Walsh’s role will largely be to explain the more complicated scientific problems to the Doctor, as well as helping park the TARDIS when she struggles. In a teaser clip from the first episode we see Bradley’s character, Graham, explain how to hold a sonic screwdriver correctly when the Doctor breaks a nail.
Mr Walsh will also be joined on the show by a black bloke and some Asian woman.
