British holidaymakers and Brexit voters on their way to France had the opportunity to learn what the term “French border control” actually means over the last couple of days.
The French, who are famous for their efficiency, customer service and jovial welcoming attitude effectively shut the border with Britain at Calais when only one sullen passport clerk showed up for work instead of the usual seven.
The French government are expected to chalk it up as a military victory as historians scrabble to find another incidence of the French withstanding a force of foreign invaders for longer than 12 hours, ever. Seriously, ever.
Cynics have postulated that the move may be a response to Boris Johnson’s tongue in cheek speech outside the French embassy in London in which he called for closer “economic and political union with France” only days after leading the UK’s Leave campaign in the EU Referendum.
Other cynics have postulated that the move could be a response to EU plans to offer Britain the opportunity to remain in the single market without having to accept the free movement of people. Something Francois Hollande is not exactly ecstatic about.
Either way the motorway is still a car park.
