Paul Nuttall gave an interview with a surprise this morning on the Today programme on BBC4.
Asked if he would satisfy the curiosity of literally some voters regarding whether or not he intends to stand for parliament on June 8th? He let the cat out of the bag.
“I can confirm this morning that I will be leading UKIP into battle in the constituency of Streatham in South-West London.”
A surprising choice. Made less surprising when you consider how tarnished his brand is further north by certain inaccuracies that appeared in his memoir, “Conversations With My Saviour.” Not the least of which was his claim to be able to turn water into wine.
“You intend to challenge the Labour candidate Chuka Umunna for the seat of Streatham?”
Mr. Nuttall elaborated.
“We all know Chuka Umunna is deeply unpopular with his constituents for being more interested in appearing on television than working for his electors. It’s alleged he’s even been seen having lunch with Andrew Neil.”
A serious charge indeed, if proven.
But Mr. Umunna voted for Article 50, or The Brexit Bill, going against the wishes of 80% of his constituents.
“I’m looking to harness that anger and then not address it. I would ask The Green Party to campaign with me and unseat the resident Brexiter. I don’t trust how he’ll vote in future.”
Are you worried he won’t support your burqa ban?
“Oh, I’m sure if he decides it’s popular with the great British people he’ll support anything.”
And pretty soon we’ll know if Paul is popular enough too.
