“I’m sure I can remember one, if you just give me a minute.” Jeremy Corbyn replied this afternoon, following the Commons vote to call a general election on June 8th. A vote backed by Mr Corbyn.
The question he was responding to is reproduced below in full.
“Name two motions of the May government that you have voted against since she assumed the throne of Prime Minister?”
“Sorry.” Mr. Corbyn was forced to admit. “I can’t think of one. I’ve backed her on every major vote since she took office.”
He chuckled and went on to explain.
“Old habits die hard I suppose. I never once voted in support of Labour when we were the party of government. I’ve always voted with the Tories in the Commons, for as long as I can remember. I guess I’m too old to change that now. I’m just a crazy old rebel at heart. I have to go with the Conservatives.”
He snorted an abrupt laugh. “Even when I’m leading the official opposition!”
And people wonder why so many Labour MPs don’t back Corbyn. Go figure?!
