Kensington Council and owners of luxury apartments in the borough are distraught following the tragic fire at the Grenfell Tower Block last week.
The council’s initial idea of finding homes in the Outer Hebrides for those who lost all had brought comfort to multi-millionaire property owners, but that comfort is now crushed.
“Its awful, I can’t believe it’s happening.” One resident told us.
“All those dreams and hopes dashed. Now that the residents have had to be rehoused in my swanky apartment block, the value will be reduced considerably. I demand answers from the council.”
After some deliberation, a council representative was sent out to speak to The Rochdale Herald.
Drew Shortstraw told us,
“Obviously at this time, our hearts go out to the families and residents who are having to suffer because of this tragedy.
We fully understand the worry of residents about the potentially diminishing price of their luxury apartment block, with pool, gym and concierge service after the temporary rehousing of Grenfell residents who have lost their homes/possessions and loved ones.
It’s a question of priorities and we are working with residents at this difficult time”.
One resident who refused to be named for selfish reasons told us,
“These people have lost their homes due to measures to make this area more profitable and aesthetically pleasing and to house them here makes no sense to me.
I stand to lose a lot of my father’s hard avoided tax because people who have nothing have been given shelter. This is just another example of the authorities not thinking about people.”
