Kelvin MacKenzie was today awarded a BAFTA for his long running portrayal of a Journalist, Editor and TV Executive.
Mr MacKenzie began portraying the character at the tender age of 17 before spending 10 years perfecting the journalist role with The Daily Express.
By his own admission Mr MacKenzie’s talents lay not so much in writing but making up headlines. A talent that led to his portrayal of a Newspaper editor in the 1980’s.
His portrayal of an editor who’s newspaper specialises in attacks on left wing political figures and celebrity exposés that often turned out to be misleading or false such as Elton John having sex with rent boys proved widely popular with the British public. But many echoed MacKenzie’s own criticism that his portrayal had a positively downhill impact on journalism.
MacKenzie later moved onto portraying a cable TV executive for the channel L!VE TV. His character was responsible for introducing ‘Topless Darts’ and ‘The Weather in Norwegian’ to the British public. The character wasn’t as popular as the earlier newspaper editor and was eventually retired.
Recently he returned to his roots playing a columnist writing for the newspaper he used to edit but struggling to make headway in the modern politically correct working environments that characterise 21st century news reporting.
His final storyline before bowing out of acting was one that saw his journalist character embroiled in a race row over comments he made about a footballer.
It’s unclear currently what Mr MacKenzie will do now his columnist character has come to an end but he maybe considering a spot as a guest panellist on the comedy circuit.
