Leading women’s clothing shop owners have said they stock clothes with inconsistent sizing to mess with women’s heads.

One leading shop owner said, “We deliberately make our clothes quite large. So a size 10 here is the equivalent of a size 16 next door. You see them wandering around really smiling because they’ve got into a size 12 here. You know that that joy is going to be snatched away when they go next door.”

Another said, “They come in thinking they’re size 10 so we size our clothes smaller than most shops. You can sometimes see the exact moment all their dreams are crushed as someone who says they’re a size 10 has to go to the size 16 section.”

Shopper Bernadette Murphy said, “It’s rubbish and makes things a nightmare. You have no idea what size to pick so you have to try 6 pairs of jeans on instead of a couple. The other week I was a size 12 in one shop but super curvy in another. We all know what super curvy is. It was that depressing that I went home and ate 2 bags of Haribo.

Shops also said messing with sizing of clothes on their Internet offering is excellent fun. One owner said,” I sent a bag of size 12 dresses to a customer the other day. They were all different sizes. I. Just know that the customer will send one back. Then I can spend 2 weeks being awkward about the refund.”

When shop owners were asked why they don’t become more consistent they just looked at us and laughed.
