A dog has told of his love of the 5th of November festivities, or “cower under the toilet night” as it’s known in the canine world.
The Yorkie/Maltese cross called, appropriately, Shakey told The Rochdale Herald “I love this time of year. There’s Diwali, then Guy Fawkes, then it’s Christmas and New Year. The variety of terrifying noise and flashes of brilliant, blinding light are fantastic.
“I usually like to enjoy it from under the U-bend of the toilet in the downstairs loo. It’s the best place to really take it all in. My humans usually go out to a fireworks party and leave me in all on my own while the cacophony of deafening noise carries on outside. It’s brilliant!
“Sometimes I enjoy it so much that I can’t contain my excitement and have a little shit on the floor. I try to get it just behind the front door if I can, not because I’m desperately trying to escape the mind bogglingly loud bangs obvs. It’s just the best place to do it,” he told us.
“Once I was enjoying the horrifyingly ear-splitting thundercracks so much that I peed on their bed. I knew they were happy that I’d enjoyed the fireworks because, once they’d stopped shouting at each other that it was the other one’s fault and changed the bed they made all the ‘mmm, clean sheets’ noises they make.”
In all seriousness though, not all dogs enjoy fireworks as much as Shakey says he does. Dogs, cats and many other domestic pets have a hearing range and sensitivity far in excess of humans and find fireworks and loud noises scary and upsetting.
Please think of your pets this fireworks night.
