Community schools are to hold mandatory morning assemblies in Mosques across the borough, it has been announced.
Rochdale Council made the announcement earlier today, releasing this statement on their Facebook page:
“Times are changing as our community grows more diverse. Traditionally the Lord’s Prayer is read at assembly in our primary schools, but in a multi faith environment we need to be more inclusive.
“So as from next week, all schools will take part in bi-weekly commutes to the nearest Mosque for readings from the Qur’an.
“These journeys will be part funded by the council, but your schools will be sending letters out shortly asking for additional contributions from parents towards transport costs.
“This will be an excellent opportunity for your child to learn about other faiths. The Lord’s Prayer will still be read once every six months.”
Council elders in Rochdale have welcomed the initiative.
