With the rise and rise of Facebook, E-Cards and Internet banking the way we celebrate important events with family and friends is fast changing.
Nowadays it’s all too easy to text or tweet a birthday message to family or friends rather than sending a card with a well thought out message and a fiver inside.
However what isn’t talked about is the damaging effect this new technology is having on the average postman’s pocket.
“It’s been really tough on us.” An unnamed postal worker told us. “There was a time when every postman would be handling dozens of birthday cards every day filled with fivers. Nowadays nobody sends anything but sympathy cards and nobody puts a fiver in those.”
Economists estimate that your local Postie could be as much as £850 a week out of pocket compared to the glory days some twenty years ago.
We spoke to retired postal worker Keith Cummings who explained;
“Back in my day a half-decent Postie could steam open and reseal an envelope in under twenty seconds. I feel sorry for the younger generation who have to work 60 hours a week to take home a half decent salary.”
