Finals Weekend at The Championships in Wimbledon is fast approaching and that can only mean one thing…the eagerly awaited 2017 Sexist Gaffes list from John Inverdale.
Inverdale, the 59 year old and formerly respected sports broadcaster, has carved a special niche for himself with the British people. This exists somewhere between the nudge-nudge-wink-wink respect that Jeremy Clarkson that gets from the bloke in the pub on the one hand to the kind of utter contempt that women have for men that watch Jeremy Clarkson and think he’s funny.
In previous years Inverdale’s Sexist Gaffes have included patronising the Duchess of Cambridge about her understanding of Rugby, ignoring the existence of Venus & Serena Williams when congratulating Andy Murray on being the first to win 2 Olympic Tennis Golds (they both have 4) and, most famously of all, describing the career-long struggle of Marion Bartolli to get to the top & win Wimbledon with the reductive phrase “she will never be a looker”.
So here is to 2017. Currently the betting is that Johanna Konta will be honoured as “a solid 62, 37 year old Venus Williams is “pretty decent for her age” and that Garbine Muguruza would “ be alright if she smiled a bit more”
I can’t wait….
