Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron says he does not believe gay sex is a sin “as long as you don’t push back”.

Mr Farron said that while political leaders should stay out of such matters “its not even sex if you don’t take your socks off”.

He has been asked repeatedly in media interviews to clarify his views.

“I don’t believe that gay sex is a sin,” he said “not if you don’t enjoy it”.

Mr Farron said that with a general election campaign under way, it was important to be talking about “big issues” like having Crucifixes on Easter Egg boxes and whether Jesus was an English speaking white guy.

“I am quite careful about how I talk about my faith. I do not bang on about it. Praise be!” He said.

He also said the Lib Dems had “undoubtedly the best record” on gay rights out of all political parties “mainly because Jesus basically only ever hung around with 12 other guys, so what was that about, eh?”
